Maverick City Music has become a big favourite of mine for this past year. Their music is so filled with the truth and passion. The words in “promises” speak about promises God has made and I believe it is so important to really remind ourselves of those promises so that when life is just chaos, we can sing His promises and know He is worthy of all praise.
“God of Abraham, You’re the God of covenant, And of faithful promises, Time and time again, You have proven, You’ll do just what You said”– MAVERICK CITY MUSIC, PROMISES
This line in this song is such a significant one for Christians because it speaks of a covenant God made with Abraham, This was where God called Abraham out from the nations so He could be used by God.
“…And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you [abundantly], And make your name great (exalted, distinguished); And you shall be a blessing [a source of great good to others]; And I will bless (do good for, benefit) those who bless you, And I will curse [that is, subject to My wrath and judgment] the one who curses (despises, dishonours, has contempt for) you. And in you, all the families (nations) of the earth will be blessed.” – Genesis 12:2-3
Abraham always wanted a son with His wife Sarah and God gave him a multitude of descendants. He gave Him nations.
That is the God we serve.
“God from age to age, Though the earth may pass away, Your word remains the same, yea-eah, Your history can prove, There’s nothing You can’t do, You’re faithful and true”– MAVERICK CITY MUSIC , PROMISES
This line speaks about how our God remains the same. People usually view the God of the Old Testament as separate from Jesus but they are the same. Sometimes we view the God of the Old Testament as a God of just wrath but if we just go back and read we will see Jesus, He saved in the old testament, He has always been merciful and loving. He is the God who set slaves free, He opened oceans for those He called out from the world. He is a God that is faithful.
“For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.” – Malachi 3:6
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” – Hebrews 13:8
“I put my faith in Jesus, My anchor to the ground, My hope and firm foundation, He’ll never let me down, I put my faith in Jesus, My anchor to the ground, My hope and firm foundation”– MAVERICK CITY MUSIC , PROMISES
Jesus is the rock on which we stand, He is the firm foundation that is not wiped away from the waters or the wind. He remains faithful, He always stands by us and has always loved us.
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” – Jeremiah 1:5 “
The word “knew” in this verse comes from the Hebrew word “Yada” which does not only mean that you know a person, but that you “deeply love” the person. It is a deeper intimacy. The same word was used when “Adam knew Eve”. This means He was intimate with her. Our idea of intimacy has been so hurt by the world but there is a love that is so pure and holy that we all desire and that love can only be fulfilled by God himself.
Maverick City Music has done an incredible job on this song and many others they have written. Check their website to keep up to date with their latest releases and events.
