Gordy releases ‘Oil on my head’

This song is a Neo-Tropical Dancehall Afro fusion song, yes that list is long but you will understand once you have a listen.

The lyric in this song speaks about the work that Jesus Christ has done for us. We will go through some of the lyrics together and you will see some key verses that relate to some lyrics.

“Nobody nobody, nobody can do what you did, You bruised the devil under your feet.”

Gordy – Oil on my head

So, I want to focus on the last line of the quote “You bruised the devil under your feet”. The wording from this specific piece comes from a verse in Genesis 3:15, this verse is a promise to Adam, Eve, and their descendants. Although Adam and Eve ate of the forbidden fruit, God will send them a redeemer. Today we know that redeemer to be Jesus Christ.

“And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” – Genesis 3:15

Took away all sin, washed away all shame, took away all my pain. This is the God in the flesh, that came down so that I may live, not an ancestor, not an idol, but the creator, He lives.”

Gordy – Oil on my head

“You shall have no other gods before me.” – Exodus 20:3

Ancestors, idols, they can’t save us from our sin, there is only one who can and His name is Jesus. When we decide to follow Jesus Christ, we cannot serve any other god. That is His terms. God is extremely specific about ancestral worship in the bible, he is specific because he knows the truth and is trying to protect us by informing us. Here are a few verses in Deuteronomy chapter 18 that addresses God’s people before they enter a new land.

“Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord; because of these same detestable practices the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you. You must be blameless before the Lord your God. “- Deuteronomy 18: 10-13

In the lyric he also finished it off with two words ‘He lives’, the ‘He’ that he is referring to is no other than Jesus Christ who rose from the dead and defeated sin and death. He is still alive, we know this because after his resurrection, he ascended to the heavens and is now seated at the right hand of his father.

Luke 24:6-7: “He is not here; he has risen!”

“So, I rejoice in the newness of life, Knowing I will rise at the return of Christ. ”

Gordy – Oil on my head

Romans 6:8-11: “Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him.”

Because Jesus died for our sin and defeated death by raising from the dead. We share in that victory, he did it for us, therefore one day we will all be raised again.

“I do not have to pay for it, God paid the price, God paved and made a way.”

Gordy – Oil on my head

For by grace, you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, “- Ephesians 2:8

This verse supports what He says, the bible teaches us that we cannot earn our salvation by doing good deed but that it is a free gift from God so that no man may boast in his own ability. Because if we are being honest. No man can obey 613 laws in the Bible, we can’t even say we have obeyed all of the 10 commandments. Has one of us not lied before? Jesus is the only one who is holy.

“I’m dripping with the oil on my head.”

Gordy -Oil on my head

The main theme of this song is anointing. So let us look deeper into what it means to be anointed.

The Greek words for “anoint” are chrio, which means “to rub, smear with oil” and it means “to consecrate for office or religious service. The second word is aleipho which means “to anoint”. People in the Bible were anointed with oil to represent God’s blessing on that person’s life (Exodus 29:7, Exodus 40:9; 2 Kings 9:6; Ecclesiastes 9:8; James 5:14). A person was anointed for a special purpose – to be a king, to be a prophet, tp be a builder, etc” -gotquestions.org

Anointed also means ‘chosen one’. Jesus Christ was anointed by God the Father with the Holy Spirit to spread the Gospel and set the captives free from sin. (Luke 4:18-19). After Jesus ascended to heaven, he gave us the Holy Spirit (John 14:16). All those who believe in Jesus Christ are filled with the Spirit, they are chosen to further the kingdom of God. (1 John 2:20).

“Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.” – 2 Corinthians 1:21-22

Please go and listen, enjoy this song. It is more than words to a beat, it has a message of life that all of us need to hear and all of us need to believe in.
