What does it mean to be blessed?
Everywhere on social media, many people #blessed on their captions especially when things are going their way. Whether it be getting a promotion, celebrating a birthday or starting a new relationship with a lover.
This is how Google defines #blessed
made holy; consecrated.
“the Blessed Sacrament”
In Scripture, Old Testament blessing was physical things such as land, inheritance and kingship. The message was “Come and See”, see what our God can do but in the New Testament, things are so different. Jesus describes what it is to be blessed in Matthew 5.
“Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. “
Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”
Jesus says these are the ones who are #blessed, we are not blessed when we have a big house, a new car, a lover, but we are blessed when we seek Him above everything when we deny ourselves when we put Him first. We are blessed when we mourn because God sees our pain, we are blessed whenever He is involved.
He says these things because He knows what it will cost to follow Him, to preach His word accurately. People don’t like the truth they would rather be comfortable. But we are not here to please man but to please God and do what He says. “Go and Tell” the nations of His goodness.
Jesus came for those who were outcasts, the poor in spirit, those who mourn, those who are persecuted for His name. Living a life as a Christian is living a life of abundance, not in earthly riches but in heavenly riches.
I think that some of us have really had the wrong perspective of scripture for a very long time and there is so much more to this than seeking material blessing when you paying your tithes. Jesus wants a life laid down, a life that truly worships Him the way He wants to be worshipped.
I believe that I am #blessed not because I have a house, not because I have a car or money but I am #blessed because I know the saviour and He knows me.
