“Be killing sin or it be killing you” – John Owen

“For the wages of sin is death,…”

Romans 6:23

Going through life, sin is no stranger to any of us. Whether you are 7 years old or 70 years old, you are a sinner. When we sin against God, it should be taken so seriously as if our lives depended on it because the truth is, it does.

Sin sneaks into our daily lives and many of us maybe don’t even notice it. Sin wants to look innocent. If you were a spy who was taking down a country in secret, you would not want to look like the enemy, in fact, spies learn the culture, they learn the language and they learn the accents, they will even go as far as to change their names, hair and eye colour to not look like a threat.

Sin is the same, it comes in the forms of things we love, it masquerades itself with our vulnerabilities therefore disguised so we cannot see it for what it is , it is decay.

It is our responsibility to identify sin and kill it before it destroys who we are. Jesus was very clear about it in the new testament.

“And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell”.

Matthew 5:30

Jesus does not mean we should cut off our limbs literally but we should do all it takes to stay away from sin.

When we do something that is contrary to the character of God, we can define that as sin. Sin leads to death, from which Jesus wants to save us (Hebrews 2:9). So Jesus gives us the warning of hell because He does not want anyone to go there (Matthew 5:29-30).

We need to wake up and remind ourselves what a big threat sin is to many lives, their eternal lives and their eternal relationship with God.

If your hand was stuck in a train track and the train was speeding towards you unable to stop and you have no way out but to cut your hand off. That is a sacrifice you need to make to live. Sin is that train.

Apart from cherishing your life, how much do you treasure Jesus? Is He good enough for you to give up the things that your heart desires, is He good enough for you to kill sin? Jesus does not want to be your enemy, He is all good and Holy, He needs to fight for truth and goodness, if you choose darkness, you are going against the most powerful being that has ever existed. He does not want to destroy you, He wants to save you.

There is no better proof than the cross, that He loves us, that He wants us to live, So far He has given us the opportunity several times and maybe you have not seen the opportunity to follow Him till you’ve read this.

So repent, seek His forgiveness, Seek Him above everything, give up your desires, live your life for Him. He is more than worth it.
