“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
This collaboration between Tobi A and Denise Bamfo is deserving of a spot in your favourites playlist. Together they’ve created a winsome song that communicates the beautiful gift found in Christian community and how it encourages us to grow in faith.
Concerning the inspiration behind the song Tobi A had to say:
“The song was written by myself and Denise Bamfo who is an amazing dutch gospel artist. This past year I have really been learning about how important it is to have a good Christian community to help on my Christian journey. In the song myself and Denise wanted to highlight two things. The first being that we should put Jesus first in our lives and we should truly serve Him with everything we have and the second thing being that we need people around us to help us in our Christian journeys because we are not supposed to do it alone.”
In the opening scenes of the song Tobi A sings, ‘one life, gotta live it right’. There’s profound truth in this simple statement, as this life we live now affects our eternity. We as Christians are called to live not in the world’s terms of only living once, but how God calls us to live this life in preparation for the rest of our lives (aka eternity). To focus our eyes on Him is to take our gaze off of the world and its promises of finding complete fulfillment in this short life. This is where our focus changes from a here and now, to an eternity mindset. The freedom we find in this shift of perspective is a sober viewing of life’s decisions, joys, and even sorrows in light of our hope-filled eternity in Christ.
The song ‘Solo’ expresses how God has created us as relational beings, who He has called to come together as His church, His beloved bride. When you are surrounded by those whose desire is to live their lives for Him, you grow toward that goal together. There are many trials that will come across your path, and burdens that weigh you down, but a true community helps lighten your load. If there is anything to take away from this amazing track, it is that we were not created to go at it solo, it’s together that we grow best. Thank you Tobi A and Denise Bamfo for this relevant reminder and incredible song.
I leave you with an expert from Dietrich Bonhoeffer, beautifully portraying the reality of true community as Tobi A and Denise Bamfo described for us in ‘Solo’.
“The Christian, however, must bear the burden of a brother. He must suffer and endure the brother. It is only when he is a burden that another person is really a brother and not merely an object to be manipulated. The burden of men was so heavy for God Himself that He had to endure the Cross. God verily bore the burden of men in the body of Jesus Christ. But He bore them as a mother carries her child, as a shepherd enfolds the lost lamb that has been found. God took men upon Himself and they weighted Him to the ground, but God remained with them and they with God. In bearing with men God maintained fellowship with them. It was the law of Christ that was fulfilled in the Cross. And Christians must share in this law.”
